Volunteer for Amis Des Écoles

At Amis des Écoles, our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization. Since our inception 13 years ago, every single project that we have accomplished has depended on the dedication of these very special individuals, both in the field and out.

Although field work is important to us, many of our most impactful volunteers have never stepped foot in the remote villages we work in. For example, we have architects, marketing experts, grant writers, product designers, web developers, lawyers, teachers and students who tirelessly donate their professional skills and expertise to helping our organization. We are always looking for new talent, so if giving back is something close to your heart, consider volunteering for Amis Des Ecoles.

“I fell in love with Morocco and its people since my year abroad in university and I consider it as my second home. Volunteer work was always a part of my life and a way for me to say thank you for all the support I have always received. I decided to write my bachelor thesis in cooperation with Amis des Écoles as a part of giving back to the Moroccan community, from which I received more love and generosity than I could ever give back.”

Since my husband and I moved to Morocco from California, I have witnessed an incredible culture filled with warm open people. I have also witnessed extreme poverty and needs so great that my desire to give back grew each day. When I met Amal, I was immediately drawn to her passion and vision to help rural Moroccan school children. Since Jan 2019, I have had the opportunity to guide the organization’s marketing and communications strategy. I feel honored to be a part of such an honest organization and I look forward to continued growth.

Why Volunteer?

Although our appreciation for our volunteers goes beyond measure, the proven benefits of volunteering can be even greater for you!  Studies have shown that helping others can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. Here are just a few of the benefits that you would experience volunteering with Amis Des Écoles.

Benefit 1: Increase your network

One of the best ways to meet new people and strengthen existing relationships is to commit to a shared cause. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, especially if you are new to an area. It strengthens your ties to the community and broadens your network, exposing you to people with common career and personal interests.

Benefit 2: Better mental health

It has been proven that volunteering makes you happy! By measuring hormones and brain activity, researchers have discovered that being helpful to others delivers immense pleasure. Human beings are hard-wired to give to others. The more we give, the happier we feel. Volunteering also helps counteract the effects of stress, anger, and anxiety. Nothing relieves stress better than a meaningful connection to another person.

Benefit 3: Better physical health

Volunteering can also help you stay physically healthy. Studies have found that those who volunteer have a lower mortality rate than those who do not. Volunteers tend to be more active, find it easier to cope with everyday tasks, are less likely to develop high blood pressure, and have better thinking skills. Volunteering can also lessen symptoms of chronic pain and reduce the risk of heart disease.

Benefit 4: Increased self-confidence

Volunteering increases self-confidence. Doing good for others and the community provides a natural sense of accomplishment. Your role as a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. The better you feel about yourself, the more likely you are to have a positive view of your life and future goals.

Benefit 5: Career development skills

Volunteering can also provide you with the career development skills that you need in today’s competitive job market. Volunteers are given the opportunity to practice skills, learn new techniques, and observe others who may be more adept in a specific role or opportunity. Volunteerism also creates the opportunity to sharpen existing skills and learn best practices. A study performed by United Health Group found that 49% of people new to volunteering said that the action helped with their career in the paid job market.

While it’s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you’ll experience, volunteering doesn’t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day. Giving in even simple ways can help those in need and improve your health and happiness. If you feel that Amis Des Écoles might be a good fit for you, we’d love to hear from you!
